New Delhi: Nokia Siemens Networks will acquire majority of Motorola's wireless network infrastructure assets for US$ 1.2 billion in a cash deal. The acquisition will put Nokia Siemens Networks in a better position to foray in the broadband segment in India. Nokia Siemens will now be able to cater to operators, who deploy both worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMax) and long term evolution (LTE) technology.
Bosco Novak, Head of Customer Operations, Nokia Siemens Networks said, "Together, we will utilise the combined strength of Nokia Siemens Networks' TD-LTE solutions and Motorola's WiMAX and LTE businesses, to better meet customers' evolving technology and business needs." Motorola claims to have 41 WiMAX contracts in 21 countries.
India has just finished the auction for broadband spectrum and operators are evaluating the right technology for their network and the Nokia Siemens Networks plans to utilize the opportunity.
The deal with Motorola in a way insulates Nokia Siemens Networks from an eventuality wherein some of the broadband players may choose to go with WiMax.
According to Kanika Atri, Head Corporate Communications, Nokia Siemens India "We could also leverage on Motorola's Wimax experience to develop TD-LTE."
Approximately 7,500 employees are expected to transfer to Nokia Siemens Networks from Motorola's wireless network infrastructure business when the transaction closes, including large research and development sites in the US, China and India.
